If you're packing fragile items for same day delivery, you're trying to do a delicate job as quickly as possible. It's easy to make mistakes when you're working quickly, but all of your efforts will be wasted if the items you're packing are damaged during delivery.

Take care to avoid the following five packing mistakes for fragile items so that your items are protected during delivery and arrive at their destination without any damage.

Putting heavy items in after lighter items

Heavy fragile items placed on top of lighter items can crush the lightweight items beneath them.

You should always take care to pack heavier items first if you're packing fragile items that vary in weight. This way, the sturdiest items will be on the bottom and will provide some support for lighter items that cannot stand up against as much weight.

Leaving empty space

Empty space in a package could allow fragile items to move around during transit. This makes it more likely that they will strike against one another or against the walls of the package and become damaged.

After you have finished packing fragile items, you should fill in any empty space with packing peanuts or air cushions. These will stabilize the items and prevent any movement within the package during delivery.

Neglecting to clearly identify fragile packages

Even the best packing job cannot protect fragile items if they are placed in a package that is roughly handled during delivery. You need to make sure that your delivery service is aware of the fact that the items you're having transported are fragile.

However, simply indicating to a delivery service that a package contains fragile items is not enough. You should also clearly specify on the package itself that the contents are fragile and need to be handled with care. Stick a large label that clearly says "fragile" on the box to ensure gentle handling.

Failing to wrap items

All fragile items in a package should be individually wrapped for protection. Sturdier items can be wrapped in newsprint. The most fragile items should be wrapped in bubble wrap for extra protection.

Failing to brace items so they won't move during delivery

Where possible, you should brace fragile items within a package by holding them firmly against package walls with packing tape.

This will prevent movement within the package during delivery. It can also make items packed in a box stay organized and prevent them from becoming mixed up while the package is being moved around.
